Mom's Corner
I also have been doing a great deal or reading and research related to being a new mom. There is so much out there it can be confusing! This "Mom's Corner" page contains links and articles of things that I have found interesting and valuable (i.e., new safety information, funny articles, etc.). I thought I would share it will all moms and moms-to-be!
Safety
Spit shine your baby!
The Schumaiers, wonderful family friends, have sent us this link. It's about how there are cancer-causing agents in the Johnson's Baby Wash, among other things. Yipes! Thanks, Linz! She also mentioned that she was looking into the Aveeno brand, but that there were problems with that one, too...
Printable safety guides
Here is a link provided by CNN to printable safety guides offered by Parenting Magazine.
Car Seat Recall
Evenflo has recalled a whole bunch o' car seats. Click here to read the article on CNN.
Watch the hand sanitizer...
This link was forwarded to me by one of my students. Like anything in your house, pay close attention to what your little ones can grab a hold of, especially hand sanitizer.
Achoo!
Researchers can't decide whether having a cat at home while your child is small is cause for concern or serves a protective function.
Gerber Cereal Recall
You try to be healthy and look where it gets ya! Gerber recalled all packages of its organic rice and organic oatmeal cereals. Click here for the complete story.
Hyland's Teething Tablets
Apparently they might be a hallucinogen. Click here to read the chatter.
Vaccine Recall
Like everything else in my son's life, here is yet another recall. Too bad he got this shot a month before the story broke.
Pregnancy and Birthing
Hypnobirthing
A lot of people have asked us about our selection of childbirth preparation. We took a hypnobirthing class, which teaches relaxation strategies in preparation for birth. We really enjoyed the class, got a lot out of it, and are looking forward to our son's birth. Here is the
information on the class we took. We also read the book
Hypnobirthing: The Mongan Method and found it a great resource.
Men and Pregnancy
Men can experience pregnancy, too! Check out this cool
story from msnbc.com.
General Health
Migraines, pregnancy and stroke? ACK! I thought this
article was interesting....
New Tests in Sex Differentiation
Can you really
determine the sex of a six-week old embryo? Some researchers seem to think so in this story.
Pregnancy Discrimination
The sad reality is that pregnant women are continuing to be discriminated against in the workforce. In this article, MSNBC reports
pregnancy discrimination is on the rise.
Its Hard to Have a Baby in Poland
There's a lot to be said for free health care, but there can also be serious implications. Here is a story about
Poland's struggle to keep up with their baby boom. I used to think Vegas was bad for pregnancy!
Readings and Resources
The current book we are reading is Karp's
The Happiest Baby on the Block. It teaches you the five S's of calming your baby.
Another great place for resources is other people! Lindsay, an awesome friend and new mommy to cute little Charlotte, has been putting together a blog. On this blog, you can find information about things that worked for her and things that didn't! She shared it with me, and I thought it would be helpful if I shared it with all of you.
For those of us having boys, I came across the
"Moms of Boys" website. For those of you who are outnumbered by testosterone in your own home, its a great place to check out.
Here is a site which outlines strategies for getting your baby to
sleep through the night.
I'm learning that there is a whole host of literature related to what vaccines to get your child. I guess that's Part One of the Vaccination Battle. Part Two is trying to calm your baby once you proceed with the vaccinations. Here is an article which discusses ways to
reduce those vaccination sobs.
Several DVDs and videos advertise that they can make your baby smarter. This
story from MSNBC debunks that notion. I found it interesting for two reasons -- first, the actual content of the story was helpful -- it basically says that you shouldn't plop your kid down in front of a TV for the first two years of life. Secondly, it mentions that July and August are the most popular birth months, which is exactly when our baby is supposed to be born.
As a trainer of therapists and a pregnant person, you can see why this next resource was attractive to me. This link follows a story describing how
infants and toddlers are being screened for mental disorders.
Here is a cheat sheet for parents to review
baby milestones.
This link presents
5 tips for expecting parents. I thought the last two were particularly interesting, especially with living in the desert and having the baby born in the middle of the summer. Good thing we got those car windows tinted!
Here is an article about
babies' speech. Basically, it talks about how babies are working on words from early on rather than just around the time they finally verbalize them. Pretty interesting!
Breastfeeding, while increasing in its frequency, is still being stopped too short, according to some. Click
here to find out more.
